Last Minute BQ? No Problem!

Let's go back to August 31st, where Phil ran marathon #47 in his quest for 50 by age 50...the Marquette Marathon on the UP of Michigan.  He clocked yet another sub 3 performance, finishing 9th and winning the Master's division in 2:58:47.  #stud

Tunde took on the challenging hills of Ellicott City at the Labor Day 10k and ran a solid 39:20, good for 4th on the men's side.  That same day, Maurice showed his endurance at the Charm City 20 Miler and finished 13th in 2:16:55.

Last Saturday, Adam ran the Bagel 2 Beer Marathon which is a challenging course through Columbia that finishes at Ram's Head Tavern in Savage.  He won it in a training effort at 2:53:27.  He's a freaking machine!!!

Sunday September 8th was the big day for a few Striders...their last chance to get BQ before registration opened for the 118th Boston Marathon at the Lehigh Valley Marathon.  I haven't talked with anyone so I can't speak to the difficulty of the course but I understand it's primarily run on a packed surface trail.  Madison led most of the way but was overtaken by Centennial HS alum, Brian Harvey, who flew past him running 5:10 pace for the last 10k to win in 2:31.  Madison was 3rd in a solid 2:38:24.  In the ladies race, Tiffany showed all of her hard work over the past several months paid off, running a HUGE PR in 3:10:31, while also breaking the top 10, finishing 7th.  Robyn needed a 3:55 to get her BQ and crushed it without a doubt in 3:34:29.  It is also worth noting that Madison's better half, Mairin, killed it in her marathon debut!  Going from no running to Lehigh in 12 weeks, she ran a 3:15:16 to punch her ticket to Boston next year!  WAY TO GO EVERYONE!

Meanwhile at Centennial Park, we had a one through five sweep on the men's side at Police Pace.  Peter won in 17:00, Nick was 2nd in 17:45, Chris 3rd in 17:55 taking top Master, Dave won his AG in 18:12, and Tunde was right behind in 18:15 to round out the top 5.  John finished 18th in 19:45.

The Four Horsemen (left to right): Peter, Tunde, Dave, and Chris
Finally, we had a crew travel to Rockville to take on the Parks Half Marathon.  Mick claims he crashed a bit over the last 5k but still managed a good run in 1:30:46 for 2nd in his AG.  Bobby wasn't far behind in 1:32:57, winning his AG and a little $.  Jess was right on front of Mick and pulled away at the end, crossing the line in 1:30:29, for 15th in the ladies race.  Emily had a successful race, as she continues to recover from recent injuries.

Happy postrace Parks crew (left to right): David, Bobby, Jess, Jack, Emily, and Mick
Maurice ran the Run To Remember 5k and won it in 18:34.

Now to this weekend...

Conrad proved once again that age is only a number, competing with the local young guns the likes of GRC at the Navy-Air Force Half Marathon in DC.  He crushed the course, running 1:15:30 for 11th and top Master.  Looks like sub-2:40 at Marine Corps is looking good!

Caroline decided to strap on her trail shoes as she ran the VA Happy Trails Women's Half.  No clue about the terrain or elevation gain, but her time indicates it was a tough one.  She finished 10th in 1:52:50.  Maurice was at it again, doubling up with a 24:18 at the White Marsh 4 Miler yesterday and 17:58 BRRC Executive Stampede 5k this morning.

In Philly, a few fellas partook in the race formerly known as the Philly Distance Run...the Rock 'N Roll Philly Half.  Craig had a huge day, clocking a PR in 1:16:03.  Tunde clocked a 1:25:12 as he prepares for Baltimore.

Next weekend features the Columbia Metric Running Festival.  If you aren't racing, please help out!!!!

Annapolis 10 Miler Results

This past weekend, a number of racing team members kicked off their fall racing season at the Annapolis 10 Miler.  Known for its tough hills and generally unfavorable running conditions (read: hot and humid), the race is typically treated more as a rust-buster than a goal race.

To the runner's great fortune, this year's race was notably cooler than previous years, making the humidity more bearable.  Whether this break in the weather resulted in faster times is debatable, but a quick survey of people crossing the finish line seemed to indicate that most looked less miserable than in years past.

The female racing team contingent was very light this year, with only two women competing for the Striders.  Emily Drew, recovering from an injury sustained earlier this summer, was most happy about finishing the race injury free.  In a few months time, she will be back to her old self and will be setting some more personal records.  Dorothy Beckett, on the other hand, was in her usual top form, finishing in an impressive 1:15:04 and handily winning the Female 50-55 age group.

On the men's side, Carlos Renjifo and Andrew Madison ensured that the Annapolis crown remained with Howard County for another year, taking the top two spots with times of 53:53 and 54:44, respectively.  The masters men put on a dominant show, sweeping the top age group prize for each of the five categories between 40 and 65.  Finishers included:

  • Chris Chattin (24th, 1st M45-49, 1:00:27)
  • Jason Tripp (25th, 1st M40-44, 1:00:36)
  • Dave Berardi (28th, 1st M50-54, 1:01:55)
  • Weems McFadden (1st M55-59, 1:05:37)
  • John Chall (2nd M55-59, 1:07:16)
  • Mick Slonacker (1st M60-64, 1:07:48)

Shout outs also go to fellow Striders David Toller (6th, 57:59) and James Blackwood (54th, 1:04:33), who train with us and finished well within the top 100.

Sssssooooo it's been a while...

Well, it's been six weeks since the last post.  I guess it's official I may be the worst blogger this planet has ever seen.  Since I have so many results to recap, I'm opting for a list in lieu of a book.  Most notably, Adam set a new team record at the lovely distance of 100 miles at the Burning River 100 in 21:05:21!  Keith also put together a hell of a weekend in July winning a 3-day stage race which included a 50k, 50 mile, and marathon. We have a decent group running the A-10 this Sunday so good luck to everyone racing!

Now for the results:

Catching up

Well, I've been slacking the past few weeks so here it goes:

Nick clocked a 37:04 at the Lawyers Have Heart 10k in DC back on June 8th for 27th.  Sunday, June 9th was Damien's 5k.  It was a hot day so no course records were taken down.  Chris ran 17:21 for 5th and 1st Master honors.  John was 19:09, only good for 3rd in this competitive AG.  In the ladies race, Jess WON in 18:36.  Robyn, reportedly battling a slight hangover, ran 20:06 for 3rd and top Master.  Dorothy was 7th in 21:40.  Here's a few action shots courtesy of Mick:

Chris checking his watch
Jess was able to crack a smile while destroying the field
Post-wine night Robyn
Dorothy nearing the finish line
Also that day, Maurice took top honors at the Running with the Devils 5k in 18:30.  NICE!

Saturday the 15th meant the Baltimore 10 Miler.  Jason kept his race streak alive on the brutally humid morning, running 63:08 for 15th and 2nd in his AG.  Tunde, acting as a 70:00 pacer, was near spot on in his duties, clocking 70:04.

Sunday was Father's Day and the humidity was front and center once again.  At the Bullseye Running Father's Day 10k, Steve ran a PR of 35:13 for 2nd.  Peter and Chris had a good battle for most of the race, but Peter pulled away over the last 1.5 miles, crossing the finish line in 35:57 for 4th, top Master, and winning the Father/Son team competition with his son, Joseph, while Chris ran 36:43.  Phil, with the help of the volunteers, was able to run his race.  He ran the entire race alone, and I mean alone.  He managed a solid performance of 37:53.  Mick took his AG in 41:25, despite acknowledging pre-race he was using the race as an 'easy' tempo.  Bobby wasn't far behind in 41:55.  He won the Father/Daughter competition with Katie.

Meanwhile, down in Annapolis, Weems and John ran the Dawson's Father's Day 10k hosted by the Annapolis Striders.  Weems edged John out again, 38:33 and 39:00, respectively.

Keith ran the San Francisco Marathon and added another sub-3:00 performance to his resume, finishing 36th in 2:54:25.  Maurice ran the BRRC Lake Montebello 5k and finished 2nd in 17:37.

Yesterday, Dorothy was our sole participant in the very competitive Baltimore Women's Classic.  She won her AG and crossed the line 25th in 20:20.

Don't forget about the Women's Distance Festival this Sunday.  If you are a guy, please consider helping out.

Well hello Mr. Summer...nice to meet you

"Party in the summer and the heat is on..."  Name that artist

Saturday was certainly a scorcher.  It was in the mid-70s and humid as hell as the sun rose.  Unfortunately, The North Face Endurance Challenge races were kicking off.  In the 50k, Tunde participated in his first ultra and ran well given the subpar conditions, finishing in 5:44:44 for 43rd and 5th in his AG.  Caroline battled through the heat, telling me that the race was way harder than it should have been.  She crossed the line in 5:42:26 for 7th and 2nd in her AG.  Tiffany, also running her first ultra, took 3rd in her AG in 6:02:02.

To nobody's surprise, Keith ran the longest race offered...the 50 miler.  The course definitely had some good hills thrown in but he ran a solid time of 7:27:31, good for 7th overall and 2nd in his AG.

The postrace North Face gang...good day for Striders all around!
Dave ran the Run for Hope - USATF Master's 8k Championships and clocked a 29:43 for 20th.  However, his team took top honors!

On Sunday, the racing conditions weren't much better, but it was one of the popular local races...the Bel Air Town Run.  Chris led the way for the men, running 18:33 for 26th and 2nd in his AG despite dealing with a stomach bug.  Weems and John had a friendly battle, with Weems taking it, 19:10 (39th) and 19:13 (40th), respectively for 2nd and 3rd in their AG.  Mick rocked his AG, running 19:55.  Dorothy had another day as well, winning her AG handily in 21:41.

Finally, though nobody treated it as a race, the Striders put on the 4.09mi Run Benefiting the Be Strong Stay Strong Fund.  All proceeds went to support two local runners that were severely injured in at the Boston Marathon, Erika Brannock and her sister, Nicole Gross.  Over 300 runners participated with several others donating money, raising $8,000 for the fund.  Runners doing what they love for a great cause!!!

Turn Up the Music...Let's Turn it Up LOUD!!!

Well, I haven't posted in a while so let me recap the past couple weekends:

Our ultra man, Keith Levasseur, competed in the Market Street Mile in Frederick on Saturday, 9/8.  For this guy, it was a quick sprint.  He crossed the finish line in 4:58, a new PR (his first sub 5:00 I believe) and 12th overall.  Kevin Ford made a return to the racing scene, clocking a 1:17:56 at the Montour Trail Half, as he continues to prepare for Marine Corps in six weeks.

Sunday, 9/9 started off with the Parks Half Marathon, a low-key but very well run race MCRRC.  What do you know, Keith was out there again, running 1:22:26.  Tunde Morakinyo wasn't far behind with a 1:26:41 for 54th.  THe race of the day went to Kelly Westlake, who won the Master's division, running a PR of 1:24:45.  The Police Pace 5k also took place on Sunday.  Conrad Orloff took the Master's crown, finishing 2nd overall in 17:00.  John Chall ran a solid 19:34 for 22nd.  On the ladies' side, Samantha Matthews and Robyn Humphrey went 1-2 in 19:48 and 19:56, respectively.

Now to this past weekend, Keith hopped into yet another marathon.  He ran an impressive 2:41:42 at the Air Force Marathon in Dayton, OH.  Good for 2nd in his AG and 9th overall.  On Sunday, the Striders repped it hard at the Rock 'N Roll Philadelphia Half.  Known to be one of the flatter courses, the weather was near ideal and the competition was fierce.  Carlos, a married man for only 8 days, led the way, running a new PR with a 1:09:20 for 29th.  Yours truly ran a 3:30 PR, crossing the finish line in 1:10:17.  This race included a 10 mile PR (53:46) for me as well.  Our favorite international Strider, Pekka Stenholm, visiting this month, met his goal and beat the Finnish National HM qualifying standard by one second, running a 1:16:59.  Jason, after flying from NH to BWI and driving up to Philly the night before after participating in the 200 mile Reach the Beach relay, ran 1:23:20.  Jorge Renjifo, a 4x week runner and certified P90X instructor, also ran a great time of 1:24:00.

Postrace Rock 'N Roll Philly...Striders and Falls Road crews unite!

Finally, the awesome weekend concluded with a pair of races in the Nation's Capital.  In the Navy 5 Miler, Robyn Humphrey and Tacy Powers, swept the Master's titles, running 32:51 and 34:51, respectively.  Conrad, also training for Marine Corps, opted out of the Erie Marathon and crushed the Navy-Air Force Half with a 1:17:35, the 2nd Master.

So who signed up for the 117th Boston Marathon???  I am not.

The Twilight Zone

This past weekend featured the premier local race of the summer...ROCKVILLE TWILIGHTER 8k

This is easily one of the most competitive local races which includes many local elites, college runners, and several African-born speedsters.  The pre-race warmup revealed cooler temperatures then normal due to a light drizzle and overcast but after we completed two miles on the course, it was apparent that the humidity was going to be a factor.

The race start got delayed about 10 minutes due to the police having trouble clearing the roads of traffic.  In the men's race, team captain, Carlos Renjifo, led the way per the usual crossing the line in 19th place in 25:57.  Mark Buschman and Andrew Madison followed in 26:40 and 27:00, respectively.  Jason Tripp kept his age group winning streak alive barely losing to the first Master, but winning the 40-44 age group with a time of 28:20.  He also earned a spot on the elite squad with this awesome performance!

Samantha Matthews led the way for the ladies, finishing in 22nd in 31:57.  Vicki Lang continued her comeback coming in 3rd in the Master's division, running 34:31.

A summary of the results:

Carlos Renjifo 25:57 19th
Mark Buschman 26:40 29th PR
Andrew Madison 27:00 42nd
Kevin Ford 28:00 56th PR
Craig Lebro 28:14 59th
Jason Tripp 28:20 62nd (1st, M40-44)

Dave Berardi 29:13 80th (3rd, M50-54)
Phil Lang 30:11 104th
Tunde Morakinyo 31:01 127th

Chris Chattin 31:24 136th
John Chall 31:56 145th (2nd, M55-59)

Samantha Matthews 31:57 22nd

Vicki Lang 34:31 34th (3rd Master)
Janeth Scott 35:55 43rd (2nd, F50-54)

Nice hair Craig!

Dave running with the young guns as always.  I used to be that guy
who would have to outrun him at the end of the race.

Vicki battling the humidity...

Meanwhile, out west in Garrett County, Bobby Gessler took part in the Salem Challenge 5k.  He indicated that the course was long (3.4 miles) and quite hilly.  However, he ran 22:04, good for 10th overall and first Master.

Sunday morning included the Rosaryville Trail Runs in Upper Marlboro.  Keith Levasseur, training for the Leadville 100 in a few weeks, placed 2nd in the 50k, crossing the line in 3:56:27, winning the 30-39 age group.

With her fantastic performance, Vicki Lang joined the team!  WAY TO GO VICKI!!!

Columbia Women's Distance Festival (WDF)

The conditions this morning were hot and humid, but that didn't deter some 400 women from taking on this year's edition of the Columbia Women's Distance Festival (WDF).  What makes this number particularly impressive in my mind is that the no-show rate was less than 10% -- an impressive number when conditions are perfect for running.  You ladies are tough!  Hats off to all of you.

Times didn't seem to be affected too much by the heat, with the eventual winner, Anna Holt-Gosslin, taking a commanding  victory in 17:45. Behind her was UnSong Ostrowski, who continues to run PRs, this time shaving an insane 20 seconds from her previous best and finishing in 18:26.  Kelly Westlake also had an excellent race, finishing 4th overall (1st in the master's category) with a time 18:51 -- her fastest 5k this year.  Samantha Matthews was next in 5th, equaling her time from the Baltimore Women's Classic (19:37) in tougher conditions.  Samantha was followed closely by Robyn Humphrey (19:48, 6th, 2nd master).  Closing out the list of performances was the dynamic trio of grand masters, who yet again achieved a 1-2-3 sweep for the 50+ age category: Pat Wilkerson (8th, 20:17), Janeth Scott (14th, 21:14), and Dorothy Beckett (17th, 21:22).

A Great Weekend for Strider Women (and Keith as well!)

After a brutal week of temperatures in the high 90s, a slightly cooler weekend (particularly on Sunday) made for some great running.

To kick things off, Keith Levasseur took part in his first ever 100k, the Mason-Dixon Longest Day 100k Challenge, in Susquahanna State Park. The gun went off at 5AM to let runners take advantage of the 15+ hours of daylight. Keith had hopes of breaking the course record of 11 hours and change, setting a PR at the distance, and getting the HCS team record as well. Almost 50 miles into the race, it looked like he would get his way, as he was well ahead of pace. But unbeknownst to him, the last 12 miles of the course would have him essentially "rock climbing" up a side of a hill, just to come back down and repeat. The course record slipped away from him this time, but he still took the team record and set a PR in the process with a time of 13:06. Two out of three isn't shabby. He has already vowed to return next year to take another crack at the record.

A few hours later, Donna Wecker and Caroline Bauer took on the challenge extended by the "Dreaded Druid Hills" of Baltimore.  Donna continued to impress, not only finishing as the first grand master, but also taking the award for top female overall with a time of 43:47!  Caroline was not far back. taking third in a time of 44:27.

Sunday proved to be another showcase of Strider female talent, with the grandmaster women in particular putting on a "master class" for their competition.  In her debut as a part of the elite women, Samantha Matthews finished in 19:37, good for 12th place.  Samantha was followed by the ageless Pat Wilkerson, who continues to run blazing fast times year over year.  Her 20:04 got her 15th overall and first grandmaster.  After Pat was Janeth Scott, who just squeaked under 21 minutes (20:55) and took 1st in the 50-54 age group.  Janeth was followed by Dorothy Beckett, whose 21:38 was good for 2nd in the 50-54 group.  Finally, Tacy Powers rounded out the list of superb times by crossing the line in 22:23 (5th in 40-45).

Congrats to all!  This coming weekend looks to be very hot and humid, so be careful if you are racing!

Tacy and Pat, after the race.

Pat and Tacy with a fellow runner (left).  I am told she is 76 years young!

Where did summer go...???

Father's Day weekend was unseasonably cool by mid-June standards.  Guess what that meant?  PERFECT running conditions!

Start of the B-10
The weekend kicked off with the Baltimore 10 Miler.  Keith Levasseur took top team honors, crossing the tape in 58:48 for 11th overall.  Not far behind was the new Master, Jason Tripp, who paced the 40+ers, posting a 59:03 for 12th place.  On the ladies side, Caroline Bauer kept up her kick-ass 2012 campaign finishing 9th with a 1:08:03.  Solid times on a slow course!

On Sunday, runners gathered at the Gateway Overlook Shopping Center to take part in the 2nd Annual Father's Day 8k put on by Bullseye Running.  There were not as many runners as I had anticipated (only about 120), but the times were blazing due to the prize money ($200, $100, $50).  Falls Road's Dave Berdan (3rd, 25:49) and Tristram Thomas (4th, 26:42) ran well on the tougher than advertised course.  Peter Keating led the way for the Strider men, finishing 5th in 28:04.  He and his son, Joseph (15th, 31:12) took the Father/Son crown.  Andrew Madison, who had to stop in the middle of the race due to stomach issues, still cracked the 30 minute mark, finishing 6th in 29:04.  Other notable performances on the men's side included: Dave Berardi (7th, 29:12) and Chris Chattin (8th, 29:50).

Janeth Scott cruised to an easy Master's win on the women's side, with a time 34:02, good for 4th.

Donna Wecker continued her comeback taking part in the Mount Hebron 10k Trail Challenge, winning the race in 48:13.  She loves running the trails, since Patapsco is literally across the street...

Finally on Sunday, Keith Levasseur and John Chall took part in the Dawson's Father's Day 10k hosted by the Annapolis Striders.  Keith ran a PR of 35:39, finishing 2nd to Karsten.  John took the GM title, crossing the line in 38:38 for 12th.

Also, we welcomed Samantha Matthews to the team late last week.  Samantha is a recent graduate of Bloomsburg University and is a former product of the Junior Striders.  She boast PRs of 18:03 for the 5k, 39:25 for the 10k.  Looking forward to having her help the ladies team come late summer and into the fall!!!

No Trails Tomorrow

With all the rain we have had in the past few days, it is very likely that the trails are in bad shape. Since I'm sure nobody wants to risk getting hurt less than 3 weeks out from their fall marathons/half marathons, we will not be meeting at the trails this week. Track workout, however, is still on for Thursday.

Track Workout/Trail Swap

We have made the decision to swap the track and trail workouts at the last minute. We will be meeting at the Oakland Mills HS at 5:30PM for a track workout today (Wednesday) and at the Patapsco trails tomorrow (Thursday) at 6PM.

Two-Person 5M Relay

Time to break out the old high school/college track spikes in preparation for this year's Two-Person 5 Mile relay on Wednesday, August 3rd, at 6:30PM (Oakland Mills HS).

Never taken part in the event before? It's pretty simple: Two participants run alternating 1/4 mile legs on the track. Each participant runs 2.5 miles total. If you've been looking for a challenging workout to help you work on your turnover, this is the perfect workout for you!

It'd be awesome if we could get a bunch of the folks on the racing team to show up. We can mix and match to make things fun. If you have a relay baton lying around at home, bring that too! If you're hurt, please consider coming also. I am the race lead and am still looking for some volunteers to help out.

Hope to see you there.

HC Striders are hotter than sparkling vampires -- Recounting the Rockville Twilighter

Folks running the Rockville Twilighter sped by yesterday, under clear skies and cooling breezes.

The Howard County Striders men raced splendidly, with Weems McFadden running 30:58 and John Chall running 31:45. Weems sported the HCS singlet, John had a nifty headband, and they were the 5th and 6th Masters, respectively.

Special congratulations to Carlos Renjifo, who achieved 14th place out of over 1100 runners, and fifth in his age group. He also ran a PR of 25:50 (Great job!). The results can be found here: http://mcrrc.org/racing/2011/Twilighter-Men-8K.html

Videos can be found, as always, on the Howard County Striders' YouTube Channel.

** update on 2011-07-21 **
The official finishing video from the race can be found on the Running Maryland website! You can see Carlos around 1:45, and hear his girlfriend cheering in the background. :oD (Thanks to Pekka for the link! ^_^)

On a bonus note, here's a conversation that we overheard between a little girl and her dad:
