No Trails Tomorrow

With all the rain we have had in the past few days, it is very likely that the trails are in bad shape. Since I'm sure nobody wants to risk getting hurt less than 3 weeks out from their fall marathons/half marathons, we will not be meeting at the trails this week. Track workout, however, is still on for Thursday.

Track Workout/Trail Swap

We have made the decision to swap the track and trail workouts at the last minute. We will be meeting at the Oakland Mills HS at 5:30PM for a track workout today (Wednesday) and at the Patapsco trails tomorrow (Thursday) at 6PM.

Two-Person 5M Relay

Time to break out the old high school/college track spikes in preparation for this year's Two-Person 5 Mile relay on Wednesday, August 3rd, at 6:30PM (Oakland Mills HS).

Never taken part in the event before? It's pretty simple: Two participants run alternating 1/4 mile legs on the track. Each participant runs 2.5 miles total. If you've been looking for a challenging workout to help you work on your turnover, this is the perfect workout for you!

It'd be awesome if we could get a bunch of the folks on the racing team to show up. We can mix and match to make things fun. If you have a relay baton lying around at home, bring that too! If you're hurt, please consider coming also. I am the race lead and am still looking for some volunteers to help out.

Hope to see you there.

"Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" Takes All-Fruit Honors

The first and second place teams + Luis from the 3rd place team

On a beautiful spring day, the team "Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" (Mark B, Andrew M, Carlos R) raced through the sidewalks of Oakland Mills to take first at this year's All-Fruit-Relay. Taking an early lead in front of the pre-race favorites and two-time champions "Team Dominate", the coconuts team never looked back. Carlos R had a good day, opting to run the first and third legs, while Mark and Andrew took the second and anchor legs, respectively. The final time was a course record (42:36), with rough splits of 10:18, 11:00, 10:34, and 10:44.

The other two teams, "Is it a Fruit or Not?" (Fruit = Tomato | Members = Brian F, Seth G, David G, Adam W) and "Oxidate" (Fruit = Date | Members = John C, Tasha H, Stefanie C, Greg H), placed 2nd and 5th with times of 46:19 and 49:47 .

Other notable team names this year included: "Delicious Green Banana" (Which was consumed as the anchor leg was approaching the finish line), "Kiwi Will Rock You", "Puff the Magic Dragonfruit", "Fruit Loops", "Dragonfruit Tails", and "Clockwork Orange".

Full results and pictures are posted here (Striders Website). Some more pictures are posted here (Picasa).

A fruitful time was had by all.

Back on (the) Track

We are back on the track at HCC this coming Monday. We'll meet at 6PM next to the HCC Athletics building, do a 2 mile warmup and then head over to the track. The proposed workout is: 4x800, 4x400, 4x200 with 200m rest between intervals. See you then!

Wednesday Track Workout

For those of you not running Boston this coming weekend, please join us for this week's workout at HCC, with the warmup beginning at 6PM.

The plan is to do a step-down ladder: 2400, 2000, 1600, 1200, 800, 400. Rest will be 400m between intervals. As for pace, you should shoot for something around 10m race pace for the first interval and then plan to run each successive interval one second faster per lap.

As an example, if your race pace for 10 miles is 5:40/mile, you would aim to run the following times per lap for each interval: 85, 84, 83, 82, 81, 80.

Wednesday Track Workout

We will be meeting at HCC at 6pm on Wednesday for a track workout. I will be taking it easy this week as I'm in marathon taper mode. My plan is 5xMile at Goal MP (5:40-5:45) with 30-60 second rest. However, rumor has it that others are planning on doing some faster stuff (perhaps as a Clyde's tune-up). So come on out and partake in the fun!
